Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

Sri Lanka is a country with a lot of waterfalls. There are over 400 on the entire island. Some have natural pools to bathe in, while others are more rugged and can only be seen from a distance.
Here is a list of the most stunning waterfalls in Sri Lanka.
Often referred to as ‘Little England’, this genteel highland community does have a rose-tinted, vaguely British-country-village feel to it, with its colonial-era bungalows, Tudor-style hotels, well-tended hedgerows and pretty gardens. Indeed, Nuwara Eliya was once was the favoured cool-climate escape for the hard-working and hard-drinking English and Scottish pioneers of Sri Lanka’s tea industry.
The total train journey from Nuwara Eliya to Ella takes around 3-4 hours. By comparison, it takes around 1.5 hours by car. The reason the train takes so much longer is that it has to cross over many mountain ranges thereby slowing it down.
In reality, the train journey will take a lot longer than 3-4 hours if it breaks down, which happens a lot. It certainly did to us, and our entire journey to Ella took around 6 hours in total!
Despite this, we urge you not to skip it, unless you're in a rush. We recommend making a day of it – take in those impeccable views around you and make the most of the company of locals also on board with you. The Sri Lankans absolutely love meeting foreigners and were always super friendly. Sparking up a conversation became such a joy during our train journey.
We recommend this as a must-do in Ella with full ratings; you would absolutely love the experience.
Mini Adams peak is the closest and easiest hike in Ella. You will get to the entrance in about 15 min walk from Ella town. Otherwise, you can take the bus towards Passara or a tuk-tuk.
If you are starting from Ella town, go towards the Passara Road and you will reach the entrance at 3rd-milepost just after the Flower Garden Resort to your right with a sharp bend.
The place got some other names too. So don’t get mis-leaded. Some call it Punchi Siri Pada, Small Adams Peak, and Little Adams Peak.
It is 1141 m in height and from the entrance, it takes up to 30-45 min for the hike. Views from the summit are incredible. 360 degrees panoramic views with clouds rolling in, is a treat to watch for any traveller.
The hike itself is a worthy experience as you walk through lush green tea estates, talking to locals who are plucking and collecting tea leaves, working in the estate.
We recommend you go early mornings or late evenings for the best views and it will be less tiring.
The difficulty level of the hike is moderate, but make sure you be safe at the summit when trying out poses for the camera while sitting on rocks.
Train tours in the highlands of Sri Lanka are rated as one of the best train tours in the world.
And of course, the majestic Nine Arch Bridge is one of the many reasons for that. The glorious Nine Arch Bridge between Ella and Demodara station is one of the engineering marvels in the early 20th century.
This bridge, which is almost 100 years old, has been built with blocks of stone and cement without any strengthening iron or concrete. The giant arches take the bridge on a curved path to link to mountains. The Bridge was commissioned in 1921 under the British Government.
Access to the place is not that hard but takes some rail walk from Ella town.
There is a story behind it that you would love to hear.
World War One broke out and the steel consignment allocated for this site was seized and was used for war-related projects. When the work came to a stoppage the Sri Lankan (named Appuhami) came forward and build the bridge with solid stone bricks and cement without steel.
The Galle Fort, or Dutch Fort as it is also known, is a fortification first built by the Portuguese on the Southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. The initial fortifications, which were built in the late 16th century, were quite basic. However, the fort underwent extensive modifications in the 17th century by the Dutch, making it one of the most important archaeological, architectural and historic monuments to illustrate the European influence in South East Asia between the 16th and 19th centuries. According to a statement by UNESCO, the site was recognized as a World Heritage Site for its unique exposition of an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries which is the criterion number four for such recognition.
Udawalawe National Park in southern Sri Lanka is considered to be the Sri Lankan national park that best rivals the savannah reserves of Africa. The National Park was established in June 1972 as a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River. It covers an area of 308 square kilometres (119 square miles) and is Sri Lanka’s 3rd largest national park (after Yala and Wilpattu). It is mainly popular for its photogenic elephants. You will see elephants everywhere in Udawalawe and you can get real close to them. Being able to see a whole family with their baby elephants is certainly one of the highlights of this national park. Spotting leopards are well known to be hard and generally down to luck because they are elusive, solitary and nocturnal mammals, hunting between sunset and sunrise. Also, their hunting behaviour makes them hard to spot as they are used to stalking their prey by being camouflaged and well hidden before pouncing. Watching the leopards interacting with each other in the wild at Udawalawe is extremely special and a highlight of our travels in Sri Lanka. From afar they look so docile, gentle – like large cats, as opposed to the fierce killers they are.
Sigiriya or Sinhagiri is an ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. The name refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 metres high. Sigiriya is considered to be one of the most important urban planning sites of the first millennium, and the site plan is considered very elaborate and imaginative. The plan combined concepts of symmetry and asymmetry to intentionally interlock the man-made geometrical and natural forms of the surroundings. On the west side of the rock lies a park for the royals, laid out on a symmetrical plan; the park contains water-retaining structures, including sophisticated surface/subsurface hydraulic systems, some of which are working today. The south contains a man-made reservoir; these were extensively used from the previous capital of the dry zone of Sri Lanka. Five gates were placed at entrances. The more elaborate western gate is thought to have been reserved for the royals. Sigiriya has many tourist attractions, including frescoes, mirror wall, and gardens such as water gardens, boulder gardens, and terraced gardens.
Lotus Tower (Sinhala: නෙලුම් කුලුන) also referred to as Colombo Lotus Tower is a tower of 356 m (1,168 ft), located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It also reflects the symbolic landmark of Sri Lanka. As of 16 September 2019, the tower is currently the tallest self-supported structure in South Asia. It is also the second tallest structure in South Asia. The tower is also the 11th tallest completed tower in Asia and it is also the 19th tallest tower in the world. Circled by lawns, the Colombo National Museum is fronted by a statue of Sir William Gregory, the museum’s founder and island governor from 1872 to 1877. Inside, visitors are greeted by one of the museum’s standouts—a large 5th-century statue of the seated Buddha. Spread over two stories, displays chart Sri Lanka’s ancient, medieval, and colonial past with everything from Bronze Age artifacts to coins, weapons, and art and include a library and natural history collections. Highlights include prehistoric cave paintings and the ornate golden throne and crown jewels of Kandy’s last kings. Most Colombo city tours include the museum, with half-day tours giving time to view the must-sees and longer tours allowing you to explore in more depth. The museum also features on Colombo Jeep and afternoon tea tours for an added dose of fun and local culture.
Great place to learn and love nature while also having fun. It is hands-on and family-friendly and therefore should definitely be visited on your holiday to Sri Lanka. Turtle populations are attacked at all stages of their lives, both from natural and human pressures, and all species of sea turtle are now classed as endangered. Without intervention, we may lose these beautiful, ancient creatures from our ocean’s forever. The natural life cycle of marine turtles is tough enough without the added pressure from humans, and it is no wonder their numbers are drastically declining. There are five varieties of Sea Turtles found in Sri Lanka, namely Olive Ridley Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle and Leatherhead Turtle.
